Twenty-five community groups are set to share $280,000 in grants and deliver 57 conservation projects in the Swan Canning catchment thanks to the latest round of the Swan Alcoa Landcare Program (SALP).

Now in its 25th year, SALP has facilitated the planting of 3 million plants to revegetate 3100 hectares of land, weed control on 7600 hectares of land, and the construction of nearly 6000 kilometres of fencing to protect remnant vegetation and riparian areas.

Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) Manager Rivers and Estuaries Branch Glen McLeod-Thorpe said these successful conservation works have improved public spaces by restoring local bushland and waterways, providing habitat for native species.

“The program helps passionate volunteers and key stakeholders fund projects that make a real difference when it comes to managing, protecting and enhancing the Swan and Canning rivers,” Mr McLeod-Thorpe said.

"The program has consistently delivered on its original intent to restore local bushland and waterways, which has provided habitat for our local species and improved the amenity of public spaces.

“Congratulations to everyone involved – from the start of the program a quarter of a century ago, through to this year’s grant recipients.”

In its 25 years of operation, SALP has provided $10.1 million in grants to 1625 on-ground projects that have engaged thousands of volunteers who have contributed more than 241,000 work hours, valued at just over $5.3 million.

SALP is a partnership between the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, Perth NRM, Alcoa of Australia, Burswood Park Board, local government and the community.
