The fourth round of the McGowan Government's Community Rivercare Program is now open, with applications invited until October 12.

The additional $100,000 of funding will mean the McGowan Government has committed $1 million between 2018-22 for community volunteer groups undertaking restoration projects that improve the health of the Swan and Canning rivers.

Since its inception in 2018-19, the Community Rivercare Program has funded 34 projects through 26 volunteer-based community groups.

Grant projects that received funding in round three included:

  • Restoration of Lion Mill Creek in Mount Helena by the Friends of Lion Mill Creek;
  • Revegetation of an eroded tributary by the Friends of Upper Lesmurdie Falls;
  • Restoration of the Wangalla Brook by the Friends of Wangalla Brook;
  • Restoration of the Helena River (west of Scott Street) by the Katharine Street River Gang;
  • Rehabilitation of floodplain areas in Ellen Brook Nature Reserve to protect western swamp tortoise habitat by the Ellen Brockman Integrated Catchment Group;
  • Re-establishment of floodplain and linkage to banksia woodland in the Bingham sub-catchment of Ellen Brook by the Ellen Brockman Integrated Catchment Group; and
  • Riparian restoration and habitat improvement project at Bennett Springs East by the Friends of Bennett Brook.

Comments attributed to Environment Minister Stephen Dawson:

"It's fantastic to see the impact these grants have already had on the health of the Swan and Canning rivers, with positive environmental and social outcomes arising from the community-led projects.

"Community groups are instrumental in protecting and enhancing the natural values of the Swan and Canning rivers and increasing public appreciation of recreational areas.

"The McGowan Government is committed to ensuring this funding is delivered to applicants dedicated to the health of these waterways, and I encourage community groups to apply for these grants."
