All biodiversity management decisions made by the department are based on timely and accurate knowledge. Information systems and spatial analysis tools are a primary mechanism for gathering, integrating, analysing, summarising and disseminating this knowledge.

Our focus is on research into new and improved information and knowledge management techniques, particularly within the domain of biodiversity and ecology.

Our works include compiling and maintaining corporate databases and data warehouses, interacting with external biodiversity initiatives such as the Atlas of Living Australia and the Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network, and ensuring science projects are underpinned by statistically sound project design.

Our work in remote sensing and spatial awareness seeks to integrate the science and application of remote sensing and spatial analysis into departmental programs.
